Frequently Asked Questions

Jean of Edinburgh asks...
I do like your blouses Ė where do you get them from?
Daphne replies...
Most of my blouses come either from Eastex or Marks and Spencer. I do buy a few tops, mainly cardigans from catalogues although quite often Iím disappointed when the colour turns out to be nothing like the photograph. Anyone else have the same problem? I am also very lucky in that I have a friend, Val Davis, who makes me up sets of necklaces and earrings to match my outfits.

Josie of South Norwood, London asks...
Where is Eggheads filmed and how many do you make in a day? Can I get tickets to come and watch?
Daphne replies...
We usually record the series at the BBC Television Centre in London, although we did make one series at Elstree when the London studios were unavailable. We make 4 programmes a day starting at 10.30 once Dermot has finished his Breakfast stint and hope to finish around 7.30 in the evening. However sometimes the recordings take longer, especially if there are a lot of ďsudden deathĒ questions which unfortunately have to be edited out to keep within the 30 minute timescale. There is no audience for Eggheads as the studio isnít large enough to accommodate them.

Ed of Norwich asks...
Do you and the other Eggheads get on together and do you socialise outside of the programme?
Daphne replies...
I donít think the programme would work as well if there was any discord between the five of us Occasionally we disagree about the right answer to give and have now learnt to pay more attention to Chris! Apart from that, we all love working on the show and it really is such fun to take part in. Some of us meet up occasionally when we are not recording, especially at the Quizzing Grand Prix events but apart from CJ who lives not far from me in Wales, I donít really see the others outside of the recordings.

Frances of Preston asks...
I heard you say on the programme that you gave talks. Would you come and give one to my group?
Daphne replies...
Before I started doing Eggheads, I did give talks on being a television quiz contestant to local WI groups and this was mentioned during one of the earlier series. However, Iíve had to give that up due to the success of Eggheads as most talks are booked up a year in advance and I never know when the BBC are going to commission further programmes. I now keep my diary free, rather than agree to give a talk sometime in the future and then have to cancel at the last moment. You will appreciate that with 6 of us to organise, there is a lot of juggling of dates and of course, the studio also needs to be available at the right time.

Fred of Harrogate asks...
When are we going to get more Eggheads Ė I really miss the programme!
Daphne replies...
Donít worry Fred. In January and February we are recording 80 new programmes so that should fill the gap for 2007.

Mary of Peterborough asks...
Are any of your children also good at quizzes and have any of them been on television?
Daphne replies...
I seem to be a one-off as far as having such a retentive memory is concerned. My daughter used to tell people ďitís skipped a generation!Ē but now my granddaughter is telling friends ďwell it must have skipped twoĒ! I always assumed I got my gift from my mother who was a voracious reader, but then I found out that my cousins on my fatherís side were also quiz addicts. In fact my cousin Ian Bradshaw now runs a postal quiz service called QTA quizzes which can be found by e-mailing quizman@tinyonline.co.uk. So if you want a quiz for a special occasion, do get in touch with him. One of my boys did go to an audition for the Crystal Maze, but as he had been up all the night before because his daughter chose that particular date to be born, he didnít get picked. Apart from that, as far as my family is concerned, - itís motherís thing, not ours!

Barry of Bristol asks...
As a big admirer of your quiz, and your general knowledge excellence, could you tell me where I can start the long road to general knowledge for quizzes?
Daphne replies...
I am afraid the only short cut I can suggest to you is to buy as many quiz books as you can. I have been collecting them for 30 years and always find some new piece of knowledge in every book. If I find an interesting question about which I know nothing, then I tend to read up about it on Wikipedia which helps fix the subject in my mind. You can get some decent secondhand quiz books from Amazon which is where I tend to find lots of mine. Also, if you have shops like The Works near you, they do tend to stock the sort of quiz books that have several thousand questions in them, very cheaply. I promise you I do not plough through encyclopedias - I just read the paper every day and if I find an interesting fact, I convert it into a question with the answer which I then put on a general knowledge database which my son wrote for me years ago Lastly and I am sure you do this already, go to as many pub quizzes as you can. You will always learn something new and so long as you can remember it, you will be surprised at how your general knowledge increases.

Maureen of New Zealand asks...
Have the Eggheads ever been beaten by one person and have the Eggheads ever been down to just one person in the last round?
Daphne replies...
The answer is No to both questions although in a recent series, we did have a very clever chap who worked for a Welsh bus company and ended up on his own against us. We went to several sudden deaths which he answered very confidently and quickly until he was stumped by a question on a French slang term. The five of us might have struggled to answer the same question and afterwards, Kevin and I tried to encourage him to have a go at Brain of Britain as we felt he was that good. I think the time will come in the future, when given good tactics by the opposition, there might just be one of us left. That would be a very interesting programme, depending of course who was left to face the opposition!

Margaret of Hastings asks...
What is your least favourite subject on Eggheads Ė I know history is your favourite, but what donít you like being picked for?
Daphne replies...
Iím not telling!

Joyce of Plymouth asks...
Why doesnít the programme have two boxes marked Go First and Go Second so that the viewers can see Dermot taking the questions from the actual box, rather than just the one card? Iíve heard people saying they think the questions are easier for the Eggheads, so this would mean everyone could see that wasnít true.
Daphne replies...
I asked the production team about this and they told me they had to be as practical as possible. It just made more sense to have one card with a number one question and a number two question on it. It is just sheer luck who gets what question and there is certainly no bias towards us rather than the opposition.
